There are so many great place to visit that are close to Auckland (some are technically still in Auckland), so we thought we would round up a few of our top picks for you. Whether you and your friends are adventurers, nature lovers or relaxers, there's a perfect trip nearby for you.
Here are our top day adventure destinations:
1. Rangitoto Island.
You’ve probably looked out over this iconic peak many times, but for about $40 each, you can get a return ferry ticket to Rangitoto and spend the day exploring its natural beauty up close. Make sure to take lunch snacks in sealed containers, lots of water, sun screen, good walking shoes, and your swimming gear if you are going in the summer. When you are there you can walk to the summit for amazing views of the city (it takes about an hour), explore the lava caves and have a swim.
2. Tiritiri Matangi Island.
This is another nearby island, but this one is for the nature lovers. Tirittiri Matangi is a wildlife reserve that you can get to on a ferry from Downtown Auckland for about $82. Whilst the trip is a little more expensive, you’ll be rewarded with a wonderful day of seeing native birds and animals and exploring this beautiful island. Make sure to bring your food and water and a camera. You may also like to invest in a book about New Zealand native birds so you can have fun identifying the birds you see.
To get to Mangawhai it is best to have a car as it is about an hour and forty five minute drive north of Auckland along state highway 1. This little town is perfect for beach lovers, relaxers and adventurers alike as you can choose to enjoy the local cafes, spend your day lounging on the beach or pop to Mangawhai Heads for some surfing. This destination is a great option for friend groups with diverse interests as it has something for everyone!
4. Goat Island.
Goat island is a marine reserve about an hour and a half north of Auckland. It is the perfect day trip destination for water lovers and nature lovers alike as you can hire snorkel gear, fins and wetsuits and explore the underwater ecosystem. There are also beautiful walks nearby so you can also explore the coast.
5. Waiheke Island.
Waiheke is a great destination for friend groups looking to relax and unwind as it is home to some of the best wineries in the region. You can also enjoy the local beaches and cafes and relax into life on the island for a day. You can get a ferry ticket for about $35 from Downtown Auckland, but lost of companies sell packages including trips around the wineries if you’re looking to splash out on a hassle free day.
As you can see, there really is something for everyone just a short drive or boat ride out of Auckland. So grab your friends and start planning your next day trip snorkelling, swimming, hiking, photographing, drinking wine or relaxing. What will you choose?
